    Time Event
    4:00p
    Days Off and On

Yesterday was my day off, though it's increasingly laughable to use that nomenclature -- I worked from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., barely stopping to eat, so there wasn't much "off" about it. Freelance work in the morning, then various administrivia and household chores and errands and such for the rest of the day. I didn't even touch my copyedits to Poison Sleep, which landed on my doorstep yesterday afternoon, nor did I do layout on the next issue of Flytrap, which I'd really like to finish before the sudden arrival of a baby makes such work implausible if not impossible. My to-do list is mighty and long, but I knocked a few hunks out of it yesterday, at least. I soldier on.

Have I mentioned I'll be at Conjecture at the end of the month? September 28-30 in San Diego. I will certainly be on some panels, and, I hope, doing a reading. I said I was willing to do three panels over the course of the weekend. They asked if I'd be willing to do six. I think we might have compromised on four, but we'll see what my schedule says when it arrives. If I could get away with it, I'd just do a reading, but panels are the lifesblood of conventions. I don't mind doing panels, really, I just don't enjoy them the way I enjoy readings, and I don't think I'm particularly good panelist. Anyway, it's right around the time my novel comes out, and the weekend of my anniversary (the two actually coincide), and also probably the only airplane trip we're likely to take for a while, what with impending parenthood. Should be fun.

    Gotta Go To Work

    Snatched from all over.

    1. Go to http://www.careercruising.com/

    2. Put in Username: nycareers, Password: landmark.

    3. Take their “Career Matchmaker” questions.

    4. Post the top umpty results:

The careers I’ve worked in are bold. Careers I've considered (if only during irrational moments in college) are italicized.

(This was actually kind of scarily accurate.)

    1. Desktop Publisher
    2. Cartoonist / Comic Illustrator (the utter lack of drawing/drafting skills is a drawback)
    3. Animator
    4. Writer
    5. Critic
    6. Market Research Analyst
    7. Print Journalist
    8. Medical Illustrator
    9. Translator (I'm actually quite bad with foreign languages)
    10. Political Aide
    11. Activist
    12. Graphic Designer (I love this kind of work, but being color blind meant I couldn't seriously pursue it)
    13. Artist
    14. Computer Animator
    15. Anthropologist
    16. Editor
    17. Archivist
    18. Casting Director
    19. Comedian (yes, I considered this, in, like, high school, but back then I had stage fright. Also: not funny enough.)
    20. Health Records Professional
    21. Historian
    22. Composer
    23. Musician (shut up. I was an almost-competent bass player!)
    24. Public Relations Specialist
    25. Website Designer (sadly, yes, because I was the most web-savvy person in the company. I made this website, many years ago, though it's changed a bit. I quickly realized web design was not the job for me.)
    26. Communications Specialist
    27. Public Policy Analyst
    28. Actor
    29. Fashion Designer
    30. Criminologist (!!!)
    31. Special Effects Technician
    32. Costume Designer
    33. Interior Designer
    34. Potter (tempting. But do potters get health insurance? Hmmm.)
    35. Craftsperson (I like how generic this one is.)
    36. Medical Secretary
    37. Set Designer
    38. Postal Clerk
    39. Industrial Designer
    40. Technical Writer

I'm surprised it doesn't mention advertising copywriter, which I'm very temperamentally suited to, except for the whole part where it makes me feel like my soul is dissolving.
