River Update

River's surgery went well (the doctor said it went "perfectly"). The pressure in the left eye wasn't as low as they would have liked, so they operated on it again, as well as working on the right eye. Our kid is currently snoozing in the swing, sporting not one but two eyepatches. No pirate this time -- it's more of a Human Fly look. Poor guy can't see a thing, so we're cuddling him and singing to him and talking to him, but it's really heartbreaking. He gets the patches off tomorrow.

The doctor says his "gut instinct" is that River is going to need multiple surgeries, but that he'll have a better idea over the next weeks and months. Not what we wanted to hear -- we wanted to hear, "He'll be good for years!" -- but we'll do whatever we must to take care of him, of course.

Thanks to all who sent good wishes and hopeful thoughts.

He'll make a fine human fly. It's never to early to be thinking about a career.

Otherwise, yay and thank goodness.

Thanks for the update. Glad today's surgery went "perfectly." I still can't imagine how difficult this must be for you and Heather, but it's very obvious you're raising a happy little kid, and I'm sure he'll be even happier when the patches come off tomorrow. Hoping you guys can get some rest tonight. I'll keep thinking about all three of you.

I'm glad this one went so well. And I'll be hoping and praying the doctor's "gut instinct" is wrong.

With one thing and another I've been out of LJ touch for most of the month, or I would have said earlier... so sorry to hear about this happening to River. I can't imagine the stress of this added to the usual worries with being parents for the first time. It certainly sounds like you both are handling it with nobility and grace. Hope he is feeling better soon. The good news is that it really looks like medical eye science is approaching taking off on its exponential development curve, so chances are good that maybe they'll even be able to cure glaucoma in his lifetime. My grandfather has macular degeneration, so I've kept very amateur track of the developments since he was diagnosed, and even for him the recent advances seem very hopeful. Hope they wind up being for you all, too.

Multiple surgeries as an infant is better than catching it later and "saving what is left". I am so glad you all caught it early and getting it fixed. Even so, it must be dreadful to see your little boy going through this

*hugs and feyrie magick to all three of you

I can't even begin to imagine how hard this must be for you guys. But I am so glad the surgery went well, and I hope the future surgeries are as minimal and infrequent as they possibly can be. Sending lots and lots of hugs for you and Heather and River.

"Perfectly" is just about good enough. I hope things continue to go very well.
