The Kids of Today Must Defend Themselves Against the '70s

Wow, I didn't realize I was the first Hugo winner born in the 1970s (Elizabeth Bear is the second, and congrats to her for her win, and to all the other Hugo winners!). I'm not sure what to think of it... I mean, in a sense it's not that big a deal -- younger people have been winning Hugos and Nebulas from time to time since the awards began, and the ever-moving tide of time is sufficient that some of those younger winners now have birthdates in the age of disco, old-school suburban ennui, and key parties. But in the comments of that Tor.com post linked up there, Bear makes a good point that she sees a demographic shift in fandom -- there's the Worldcon crowd, and there's the Wiscon crowd (which skews younger and more diverse in various ways). That's a huge generalization, of course, and yet, it's a generalization that fits me personally; I've been going to Wiscon for seven years, but have only been to three Worldcons, two of those in my home state (and the other because I was nominated for the Campbell Award, in which longtime readers will recall I placed a gentleman's fourth.)

I dunno what the hell it means, but it's kind of interesting.

And, y'know, it's always cool to be the first in something. As long as it's not something bad.

And I've never been to a Worldcon. I wanted to go to this year's, but the registration price killed it for me. I think registration prices might be part of the reason that we see younger audiences at cons like WisCon, or even more local cons that don't require a bus, plane or car trip.

I wonder when we will see our first Hugo winner born in the 1980s.

That's a good point. I'm probably going to be attending Worldcon in Montreal next year, and it seems the price for a membership is already $215. Yikes.

Wow. Definitely kills it for me in 2009, too. It's already going to be a huge pain in the butt to get to Winnipeg for World Horror :(

You kids get off my lawn!

The price is an issue, yeah. I, personally, prefer smaller conventions anyway. And I meet with my editor at Wiscon, so there's no pressing business reason to go to Worldcon, usually.

I doubt it'll be long before we see a child of the '80s winning. People that young are writing tons of good stuff -- hell, they're nearly 30 now, and I was 30 when I won my Hugo (and people far younger have won in the past). But I get the (unscientific) impression that younger people aren't publishing as much in the digest magazines, which is where most of the Hugo nominees come from. I've published, what, two stories in the digests? (And only Asimov's, never F&SF or Analog). But nevertheless I've published enough stories to fill two collections with no repetitions, with a bunch of lesser stories left out! The field is changing. Who knows what it's changing into? But I think it's pretty vibrant.

*Stands on the lawn and blasts some stupid band that you never heard of, and which is trash compared to the REAL music you had when you were my age. ;)*

I prefer smaller conventions, too. I also worry that I'd get lost in the shuffle at a Worldcon, especially as I don't have an agent or a book deal with a New York house, and usually end up hand selling my books out of my convention tote bag.

I'd have to agree with your premise (based completely on an unscientific study myself) that people my age aren't reaching for the digest magazines as much. Keep in mind, too, that a lot of us are also going the small/mid-sized press route, and it seems to me that most of the longer work on the Hugo and Nebula ballots draws from companies like Tor, Bantam, etc. For those of us who have made forays into the poetry world like I have, we don't even have much that is Hugo eligible, but I'm an unusual case that way.

I'm also going to have a short story collection published in 2009 (mostly new stuff) and I have a number of short stories appearing in short story/poetry mixed collections that should be out this year. So, yeah. I think the field is changing. I hope some times that I'm part of that change and not sort of just peeking in through the windows of the workshop.

Oh! I just remembered. I have one of your collections! :D

Quick, buy the other one!

It's heartening that the Worldcon membership doesn't hesitate to *vote* for stuff by we young upstarts, though -- it's just a question of getting the fiction in front of them.

OK! :D

Wait ... can the Worldcon membership actually vote for stories that don't appear in, say, Asimov's or novels that aren't published by a big name publisher? I'm just recently 28 and have never been to a Worldcon, keep in mind, so I apologize if this is a stupid and/or obvious question. I just have no idea what the voting criteria looks like.

Best short story is "Awarded for science fiction or fantasy story of less than seven thousand five hundred (7,500) words." They could vote for a story written on napkins and passed out in a bar if they wanted. Occasionally stuff from smaller or online publications get selected, but not that often.

Same for novel, just has to be over 40,000 words (and science fiction or fantasy, of course).

Congratulations. :)

There's another thing I just noticed about that gap. If you accept that Generation X was born from 1965-1982, there are only five winners from our generation. Of those five, four were at this year's WisCon (you, Bear, Ted, and Kelly). I pretty sure that none of you were at Worldcon, even though it was in the US this year. The fifth is J,K. Rowling, who has nothing to do with cons.

I thought Bear was at Worldcon, but I could have misread her LJ ...

Ahh. My bad. That's what I get for trying to read LJ while sleep and energy-addled from a long work weekend.

True, though it's not like we never go to Worldcons (aside from Rowling!). Though I think in general you're more likely to see us at Wiscon, yeah...
